Our Team
Dr. Kathryn Flegel was raised in Montana. She earned her undergraduate degree from Montana State University and her doctorate in medicine from the University of Nevada. She trained in internal medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, where she served as a primary care physician for 16 years.

Because of her interest in individual and family mental health, she completed training in general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) in 2002. She also completed additional training for three years at the Oregon Psychoanalytic Institute.

Dr. Flegel practiced at Portland Providence Medical Center for 12 years and served as an associate professor at OHSU, where she trained child psychiatry fellows and general psychiatry residents. She continues to provide supervision for psychiatrists, nurse practitioners and other mental health providers.

Dr. Flegel tells children that the work they do together is to be "brain detectives.” She wants children and families thinking together about why feelings or behaviors are so challenging. Treatments include “talk therapy” and medication if appropriate. Every treatment includes education, support for families and the engagement of school representatives when needed.
